Highly esteemed Thomas Merton said "The more you try to avoid suffering, the more you suffer, because smaller and more insignificant things begin to torture you, in proportion to your fear of being hurt. The one who does most to avoid suffering is, in the end, the one who suffers most."
All great spirituality is about what we do with our pain. Our wounds are God’s hiding place and hold our greatest gifts. It is no surprise that a dramatically wounded Jesus became the central transformative symbol of Christianity. Our salvation is in gazing upon the wounded one.
John 3:14-15 "And as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life."
