Sacrifice, the greatest act of love, runs against the grain of our basic humanity.
The call to lay down our life for others is a call, not just to love truthfully, but to help us transcend our humanity into divinity.
The words "sacrifice" and "sacred" share the Proto-Indo-European (PIE) root *sak- "to sanctify, make holy"
Truth is, love and holiness are one.
John 15:13 "There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends."
Leviticus 19:2, 20:7 "You must be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy... Sanctify yourselves, therefore, and be holy."
