The day we were born, in our original innocence like Adam and Eve in Eden, we lived in an unconscious state of full connection with the divine. However, as we grew out of innocence, we started to think of ourselves as separate and adopted an autonomous identity – the “false self.” This, I believe, is our first death. Many people live their entire lives under the delusion of the false self, confusing it for reality. They have died before dying.
Although we may have lost our innocence in our first death, we never lost our union with the divine.
It usually takes a long time to rediscover what we lost and progressively find our unique way of personifying Love. Letting go of our false self, we find God and find our True Self – then we are born again!
Our life is a dance between the loneliness and desperation of the false self and the fullness of the True Self. The spiritual journey is never a straight line, it is a path of deeper realization and transformation, a back-and-forth journey of ever-deepening choice and surrender to God’s work in us.
John 3:3 “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”
