consumerism

When we approach Christianity as consumers rather than seeing our faith as a comprehensive way of life, an interpretive set of beliefs and values, Christianity becomes just one more brand we consume along with Gap, Apple, and Starbucks to express identity.

In a way, Christ has been demoted from Lord to label. This results in a Christian life that no longer carries an expectation of obedience and good works, but rather the perpetual consumption of Christian merchandise and experiences.

Consumerism has become ingrained in our way of life and has become part of our thinking and behavior - we need to consume in order to survive.

The 21st-century Christian battle cry must be a return to giving, rather than consuming. This demands a redirection on our part: How will we be defined; by what we take or by what we give? By what we consume or by what we contribute?

We need to be defined as a people who give Christ away.

Luke 12:33-34 “Sell your possessions and give to those in need. This will store up treasure for you in heaven! And the purses of heaven never get old or develop holes. Your treasure will be safe; no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be."
