desires and fear

We all have basic fears around which our lives are oriented. The fear of being worthless, unprotected, useless, corrupted, overwhelmed, deprived, violated, uncomfortable, or defective.

These fears have become so enmeshed in our worldview that we have become blind to them and their profound impact on everything we do.

Consequently, we develop corresponding desires, emotional and psychological needs that go hand in hand with our basic fears. We spend much of our lives seeking the fulfillment of those desires - "emotional programs for happiness."

Our basic fears are illusions; lies we have believed about the world, about ourselves, and even about God. Once we learn to see and know them, over time they begin to lose their grip upon our lives.

Like bacteria, fears grow well in the deep dark places that we hide. But when they are exposed to the light, they die off. This then leaves a void that is instantly filled with the perfect love of God.

1 John 4:18 "Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love."

Ephesians 5:13 "But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light."
