God is love and God loves. We need to realize that love is what existence is made of. Where there is energy of attraction, union, abundance, and life, there is God.
God is divine love emerging in evolution and as persons unite: “Where two or more gather in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). Evolution and all of creation constantly manifest newness because God, love, is always expressing itself in new patterns of relationships.
Heraclitus once said “you cannot step into the same river twice,” meaning change is inherent to life; every act bears an essential newness. Divine love is not a river of stagnant water but a fountain full of overflowing love, love that is forever awakening to new life.
With the suffering and violence abounding in the crevices of life, our only real hope is in God, because hope is the openness of love to infinite possibilities and new life. Our God of love appears in Jesus of Nazareth, a God who is radically involved in the messiness of the world to be God for us.
Faith in God is knowing how intimately close God is. Jesus was immersed in a culture of violence, conflict, and anxiety, but he also knew of the deeper truth hidden beneath the surface of human judgment – that this broken, anxious world is oozing with God. This is why He asked us to know, without a doubt, that the reign of God is among us and within us!
Psalm 139:7 “I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!”
