Even before he made the world,
God loved us and chose us in Christ
to be holy and without fault in his eyes.
(Ephesians 1:4)
The Atonement Theory that has dominated Christian dogma suggests that the bloody sacrifice and death of Jesus was the necessary settlement for our sin-drenched humanity. This theory is based on retributive justice rather than the restorative justice that the prophets and Jesus taught.
When we begin Theology negatively or focused on a problem, we never will get off the cycle of shame, separation, and violence.
Jesus undid “once and for all” (Hebrews 7:27; 9:12; 10:10) ancient religious concepts of sacrifice and replaced them with an economy of grace and love.
