freedom and love

“Knowledge is learning something everyday.

Wisdom is letting go of something everyday.”

- Zen proverb

In our current consumer society, it is counter-cultural to let go of anything. Having and wanting more of everything is considered better.

Authentic spirituality, on the other hand, is about letting go. Once we see what enslaves us and keeps us from freedom, we would realize the need give up.

The freedom Jesus promises involves letting go of our false fallen self, our cultural biases, and even our fear of loss and death. Freedom is relinquishing our desire for more and better things; it is abandoning our need to control and influence. It is even discarding our immature need to know and be right.

We start breathing the breath of freedom when we could let go of our three primary motivations: our need for power and control, our need for safety and security, and our need for affection and esteem.

Matthew 19:21 “If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

John 8:32 “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
