"Our idea of God tells us more about ourselves than about Him." - Thomas Merton
Among the sins to which the human heart is predisposed, there is none more displeasing to God than idolatry, for idolatry is basically a denigration of His character.
The idolatrous heart assumes God is other than what God truly is and substitutes for the true God one made after man's own likeness. One which will always conform to the image of the one who created it and will be according to the moral state of the mind from which it emerges.
A god begotten in the shadows of a fallen heart will never come close to the likeness of God.
Misconceptions about God are only the fountain from which the polluted waters of idolatry flow. The idolater simply imagines things about God and acts as if they were true.
Proverbs 2:3-5 "Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God."
Jeremiah 2:13 “For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me - the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!"
