Spirituality has two paths. The more popular and accepted path of return, which is religious, offers a rational and orderly world of meaning. The second and unappreciated path is of the fall, which is directed by the prophets who lead in letting go of misconceptions and exposing false gods.
The prophets are disrupters of the cultural consensus. They expose and topple things that are made absolute by religion, but are not absolute. Yes, we have a deep psychological need for some solid ground to stand on, but the prophets remind us that God is the only absolute.
It is terrifying whenever we’re offered a prophetic synthesis or paradigm, especially for those who are heavily devoted to the old, living in the only world they’ve ever known.
Prophets are lovers of spiritual freedom who keep humanity free for God and God free for humanity. Prophets make God’s Word—Love—the center, the axle, and the standard of everything we do in the midst of the storm of change that engulfs life.
1 Corinthians 14:1 “Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy.”
