Consumerism is now the most successful “religion” on earth. Money has taken control of every aspect of our lives, and it has become extremely difficult to find our moral compass. People expect more, want more, and believe they even deserve more.
Nevertheless, the more we own, the less we enjoy. This is the paradox of materialism. The more we project our soul’s longing onto things, the more things disappoint us. Seeking higher or more stimulating experiences advances the spiral of addiction and consumption.
Happiness is an inside job. Practical knowing of our value and identity in God and His plan allows us to let go of status, privilege, and wealth. The objective is to learn how not to be attached so we would not be owned by possessions.
The true goal of all religion is to lead us back to the place where everything is one, to the experience of radical unity with all of humanity, and hence to the experience of unity with God.
When we experience the foundational participation in the abundance of God, we find it much easier to live simply. We find our satisfaction in an inner place, at a deeper level inside us. We are able to draw from this abundance and share it freely.
Matthew 6:19-21 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”
