love's need

The proper approach to the Bible is akin to what love needs.

We must read the Bible with modesty, restraint, and openness, free of agenda, and allow the Spirit to rouse deeper meaning. The approach to Scripture must be more about transformation than information.

As Romanian-French playwright, Eugène Ionesco wrote, “Explanation separates us from astonishment.” Teachings and too many words separate us from astonishment, they act as a substitute for inner experience.

The Bible’s phenomenal anthology of books and letters is not for the sake of proof or certitude, they are all for the sake of astonishment! The Bible is for divine transformation, not intellectual satisfaction.

Biblical revelation invites us into a genuinely new experience, and the proper approach is our response to the invitation. We have approached the Bible as an assemblage of ideas by which we can be right or wrong, rather than an invitation to a life each one of us desires.

1 Corinthians 2:13 “When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit’s words to explain spiritual truths.”
