No matter where we are, the time and place are always holy, for the presence of God is infinite, everywhere, always, and forever. We are always in the presence of God. The only change is always on our side—God is present, but we are not present to His Presence.
Such simple presence is the practical, daily task of all spiritual disciplines. Presence always is. The problem is, we are usually somewhere else. We are either reprocessing the past or worrying about the future. If we watch our mind, it does not think many original thoughts. We just keep thinking in the same problematic ways that our minds love to operate.
All that we are looking for in life—all the happiness, contentment, and peace of mind—is right here in the present moment. Our very own awareness is itself fundamentally pure and good. The only problem is that we are so caught up in the ups and downs of life that we do not take the time to pause and notice what we already have.
Let us not forget to make time to recognize the richness of our basic nature, to see the purity of our being, and let our innate qualities of love, compassion, and wisdom naturally emerge.
Wherever we are and whatever we are doing, let us pause from time to time and relax our mind. We do not have to change anything about our experience. We can let thoughts and feelings come and go freely, and leave our senses wide open. Let us make friends with our experience and know the spacious awareness that is with us all the time.
Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God.”
