The Third Eye is common to eastern religions such as Hinduism. However, in the medieval period, Christian philosophers offered names for three different ways of seeing that influenced scholars and seekers in the Western tradition.
They wrote that humanity was given three different sets of eyes. The first was of the flesh for sight and thought, the second of reason for reflection, and the third the intuitive eye of true understanding for contemplation.
The loss of “third eye” wisdom can be attributed to as the basis of much of the short-sightedness and religious crises of the Western world. Making it difficult to move beyond the ego. Everything is split into dualistic oppositions like liberal vs. conservative and theology becomes more a quest for power than a search for God and Mystery.
We need all three sets of eyes because, without them, we only deepen and perpetuate our problems.
We need more and more “third eye” persons who can grasp the whole picture and lead movements of conversion, enlightenment, transformation, and holiness.
2 Corinthians 12:2,4 “I was caught up to the third heaven fourteen years ago. Whether I was in my body or out of my body, I don’t know—only God knows. I was caught up to paradise and heard things so astounding that they cannot be expressed in words, things no human is allowed to tell.”
