God wants everyone to know that Christ is within us and we, therefore, can look forward to sharing in God’s glory. This is the Christ Mystery that Paul speaks of in Colossians; it is the indwelling of the Divine Presence in everyone and everything.
Paul was a mystic of the highest degree, which explains why he was able to see Christ everywhere. Being a mystic means having experiential knowledge instead of just textbook or dogmatic knowledge. Mystics get the whole picture; they go beyond more sequential and separated ways of seeing the moment.
Mystics throughout the ages knew Christ as another name for everything—in its fullness. Twentieth-century Trappist mystic Thomas Merton wrote, “Christ prayed that all people might become One as He is One with His Father, in the Unity of the Holy Spirit. Therefore when you and I become what we are really meant to be, we will discover not only that we love one another perfectly but that we are both living in Christ and Christ in us, and we are all One Christ.”
Colossians 1:26-27 “This message was kept secret for centuries and generations past, but now it has been revealed to God’s people. For God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory.”
