When our True Self is awakened, only then would we recognize the whole from which it came. The “unsaved” souls cannot dare to imagine they could be one with God/Truth/the universe. This is the illusion that Thomas Merton (1915–1968) called the “false” self that believes it is autonomous and separate from God. The Universal Being or “the One in whom we live, and move, and have our being,” as Paul said to the Athenians.
Our True Self is Life, Being, and Love. Love is what we were made for and love is who we are. When we live outside of Love, we are not fully conscious and living from our true Being. Our True Self is a tiny flame of this Universal Truth that is Life itself, Consciousness itself, Being itself, Love itself, God’s very self.
Acts 17:28 “For in Him we live and move and exist.”
