With society and culture constantly evolving, it is imperative that religion be dynamic and progressive. Leaders in religious institutions each have roles in the process of collective transformation.
Prophets help us see reality clearly through the ever-growing illusions of society and culture. Their role is deconstructing and toppling emerging “false gods.” Priests, on the other hand, lead us on a path of transcendence while returning to meaning.
The history of Christianity is a story of the tension between order and prophecy. Coming as a prophet, Jesus challenged and transformed Judaism. At the same time, His teachings were of transformation and helped enthrone the meaning and primacy of love, with no message more eloquent than His crucifixion and death.
Perhaps, the growing spiritual discontent of people is a prophetic nudge, needing institutions to listen, to change, to be more responsive and relevant.
2 Corinthians 4:16-17 “That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!"
