self-deception

Cognitive dissonance happens when anxiety is stirred in us because our beliefs or decisions are challenged, or when we tend to justify a mistake or wrong behavior. This is our human response in order to maintain inner harmony.

We deal with cognitive dissonance by attempts to relieve this tension in different ways, such as by rejecting, avoiding new information, or explaining away - especially to ourselves.

Cognitive dissonance is the reason why we lie to ourselves.

Jeremiah 17:9 “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?"
