A life of love is a supernatural life. It takes resources that we do not have. Left to ourselves we cannot truly love; nobody is by nature a loving person. If we were, love would not be a fruit of the Holy Spirit; it would be a fruit of our personality or our upbringing, or our chromosomes.
The Holy Spirit is the link between God's love for us and ours for each other.
A deepening relationship with God produces virtues - the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Virtues that guarantee a lasting love relationship with God, ourselves, and others.
Ultimately, this love for our self and others deepens our love-relationship with God.
Galatians 5:22-23 "But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!"
