Spirituality is letting God, not our ego, steer our life; letting go of our own will, our own needs, and our own preferences until we are free of their domination and able to find happiness and love at a much deeper and more truthful level.
The object of spirituality is the primacy of the soul over the ego. So much so that Jesus exhorted: "If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?" (Matthew 16:25-26)
The essence of the self is love and happiness, our very soul - a unified, indissoluble, immortal entity that remains beyond time.
