“For we are God’s masterpiece.
He has created us anew in Christ Jesus,
so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
(Ephesians 2:10)
The universe continues to unfold, and so do we. Our ethics, morality, and spirituality evolve through four stages: Cleaning up, Growing up, Waking up, and Showing up.
Cleaning Up is driven by the moral ideals that Jesus taught and embodied – a change in consciousness (see Matthew 6–7).
Growing Up is the psychological and emotional maturity that we undergo; in other words, becoming virtuous.
Waking Up refers to spiritual experience, which leads to surrender, love, and union with God – the Christian meaning of salvation or enlightenment.
Showing Up means engagement, social presence, and a sincere concern for justice and peace for others beyond ourselves. This is the full and final result of the prior three stages – God’s fully transformed “work of art.”
We do not have many people showing up in the suffering trenches of the world, most probably because we and our religious institutions have merely focused on either cleaning up, growing up, or waking up.
