The law is not to make us worthy of God’s love. God already loves us, and we cannot make God love us any more or any less whatsoever.
The purpose of spiritual law is to sharpen our awareness of our own weaknesses and who God is for us. If we have ever tried to get rid of a negative impulse through willpower, instead of through a “Higher Power,” we surely have experienced this reality. Surrender is the goal, not personal ability and achievement.
God not only allows us to make mistakes, but also uses our mistakes for our benefit! That is the Gospel wisdom of grace, and what makes it worthy of being called “good news and a joy for all the people” (Luke 2:10).
When we are redeemed from the creative tension of law and grace, we will know that we have finally succeeded; and ironically, we will have won by losing!
Galatians 5:18 “But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”
